Odd.
The other night I watched the biopic Control, and found myself oddly transported by the story of Joy Division and Ian Curtis. Although I had a copy of Unknown Pleasures floating around, it never really clicked for me.
Until now.
It seems that 30 years ago, Ian Curtis killed himself.
Like I say, odd. Anyway, here's Transmission:

Depression has wreaked havoc among artistic types for all too long- I just wish people were more compassionate about mental illness.
Ok, I LOVED Control, I saw it recently too.
ReplyDeleteHe didn't just kill himself, he did something nastyawful with some sort of kitchen thing. It was 10 shades of wrong. Control doesn't really go there, but I read about it, and wow.
Man, did I love Joy Division. I will admit I also like New Order.
I think I wrote about this in a Random 11 long ago, but when you hear Joy Division, it's really not shocking that Ian Curtis killed himself. Some artists are depressing. Joy Division was depression. Compelling stuff but I find hard to take in large doses. I have a hard time getting through all of In Utero for the same reason, even though it's brilliant.
ReplyDeleteHuge Joy Division fan. Is Control good? (already have Von's vote)
ReplyDeleteWell, you ARE a nihilist, fish, so it's understandable.
ReplyDeleteJoy Division kind of passed me by until now. I kind of preferred New Order, and JD was so brief.
But yeah, I liked the movie quite a bit. The performances of the actors portraying Ian and Deborah Curtis were really wonderful, and the translation of the sound of the band was spot on.
Do not watch the recent Germs biopic. Horrible.
