The real danger here is that our allegedly liberal press will spin 3 entirely predictable (and inconsequential) elections into a Republican landslide (like they did with election that G.W. Bush didn't win in 2000). ~
Yeah Deeds wasn't great Thunder, but McDonnell was a graduate of Pat Robertson Law School. That should disqualify you from holding any public office for being a complete lunatic.
Mr. McDonnell read the electorate's independent and swing voters correctly by playing down divisive social issues, such as abortion, that had occupied much of his attention during his earlier years as a legislator, and by broadening his appeal to women, minorities and others not always effectively courted by the GOP.
The loss of marriage equality in Maine is worse, as I see it. VA will have new elections in a short while. Meanwhile, many of our brothers and sisters continue to be sidelined and marginalized, denied basic rights because some people find sex icky, and their own Personal Gawd feels exactly the same way. If these people's ancestors had the opportunity to issue referendums on the issues, African-Americans would still be slaves and you, AG, would not be able to vote.
Not to make the media mistake of reading too much into this, but I think it's pretty telling that the Democratic candidate won in New York over an expressly Conservative candidate, despite the sprinkling of Palin Jesus dust. The whole conservative schtick right now is the idea of ditching moderates, and in the one race where they did that, they got beat, in a district that had been a Republican stronghold for a century.
The other thing is, while it's sad the gay marriage bans are winning, the margins become closer every year. Just a few years ago those measures were passing with overwhelming votes. Now they are much closer.
yeah, Brando, I agree that the tide is turning. But are YOU volunteering to go to our gay neighbors and tell them they need to be patient, a little MORE patient? for just a few more years?
it's time to beat down this stupid narrow minded religious intolerance.
The results in Maine are because of lies. The referendum was written in Backwards land, so Yes meant No, and the ads were filled with the standard FUD.
In Virginia, not so much. The democrat was lousy, and VA has a long tradition of electing opposite the Presidential party.
No, I don't want to say be patient. It has to be depressing and infuriating to gay men and women. But the way the results are changing should be somewhat encouraging and show that attitudes are moving toward wider acceptance of gay rights. So I guess what I say is keep pushing, because that boulder is moving a significant amount.

Women were close to getting the right to vote in the 1860's, but were told to be patient. It took them until 1920. I hope the gay community doesn't have to wait that long.
However, I do agree that progress is being made... even if at glacial speeds.
Deeds wasn't such a great dandidate himself, A.G.
ReplyDeleteHe was never a threat to win.

ReplyDeleteI don't care how low hanging deeds was, it hasn't been like this since the Civil War.
ReplyDeleteAccording to the esteemed Mister Fred Hiatt:
ReplyDeleteMr. McDonnell read the electorate's independent and swing voters correctly by playing down divisive social issues, such as abortion, that had occupied much of his attention during his earlier years as a legislator, and by broadening his appeal to women, minorities and others not always effectively courted by the GOP.
And when has Fred Hiatt ever been wrong?

Disappointing as it is, it's frickin VIRGINIA.

NY 23 is just pretty fucking funny though.

ReplyDeleteI respectfully disagree, ZRM. However, I don't feel like getting into it here.
