There is another blog I read that frequently uses the word, retarded.
I loathe that. I said something once. It fell on deaf ear's, so I packed up the AG roadshow and moved on. No need trying to teach what are supposed to be relatively educated people how to act. It's like trying to reason with a sports Dad about my diagnosis of his kid's ADD. It's a futile exercise and I end up calling Social Work into the case because I do not have to deal with that and frankly, I went to medical school and he did not. So, AG wins. Wah. Wah.
You've probably read, heard or even said the word (and/or its "'tard" related speak) if you watched last year's MTV Video Music Awards; saw "Napoleon Dynamite," "House Bunny" or the listened to the Black Eyed Peas unedited and on and on. Ben Stiller's Tropic Thunder brought it all to the forefront for mainstream America though. "You went full retard, man," Robert Downey Jr.'s character -- in blackface -- admonishes a deflated Speedman. "Never go full retard."
Yikes.
Society uses the word with tacit acceptance and it seems to transcend still today into younger generations. The word is not offensive on prima facie. For example, when we say that cell development was retarded because the cells were agnostic to the intervention. We are all good there. It is however offensive when a 40 something suggests that something that no longer works is retarded. The latter is clearly hate speech for the point of hate speech. Thus, retarded is used in place of anything that is different, odd, and lame.
We as a society have an obligation to stand up to this kind of schoolyard hooliganism. After spending an evening last week with someone who informed me that he was beaten many times on the schoolyard, I realized that we as a society have not transcended much. In fact, said person suggested his putative child should also endure such brute behavior on state owned, education provided, liberal bias property if s/he is a wise acre. Wow! We still think kids deserve a good beat down for being wise mouths and retarded is OK for things we do not understand or like?
We are in real trouble folks. Real trouble.
This schoolyard mentality and unevolved and unexamined lifestyle is offensive to all. We can no longer afford to sit back and watch America become less and less able to function, let alone compete in the global marketplace because we think a good beating and hate speech is just par of the course. If we need to use the word to make something funny or dress down someone that we do not know how to use our words with --- what kind of a society are we? Certainly not one that has progressed and learned to coexist.
I weep for America.
More Plagues, Please

It's not right, but I feel about this like I feel about any subject that's supposed to be taboo; if you can make me laugh about it, it's okay. Also, while it gives me no more right than anyone to use the term, I find that referring in passing to my special-needs children as retards can help my friends know that I don't take it so seriously that they can't brooch the subject.
ReplyDeleteLike if Ben Stiller had said "full retard jacket," maybe it would be okay. But this is Ben Stiller we're talking about. He can't really compete with the rest of us. Jew or no.
ReplyDeleteOk, Jack! I am drunk at World Cafe, so I have no idea what you've said!!!
ReplyDeleteAnd you didn't drunk-dial me?!
ReplyDeletewah wah, AG always wins. We know this, you are just cool like that.
ReplyDeleteInsults did not always have a backlash, but there's always been a way to insult someone without upseting someone else. It used to be "you're ugly and your mother dresses you funny", at least down here. then society changed to white people calling each other the "n" word, and any form of racism is completely unacceptable in my book. Now it's changed again all over the place. retarded is getting rampant use, so is "gay" thanks to movies like the 40 yr old virgin.
now i'm guilty of calling other straight guys "gay", but i cut it out once one of my gay friends reminded me how offensive it was, even though i was not talking to or about them.
Retard seems to be the new gay, and i'm not a big fan of it either. kids with mental retardation have nothing but love to give, they don't know what hate or negative is. why that means that hateful people can make fun of them i don't understand.
Thanks John for your comments. I appreciate your honesty about prior use of words.
ReplyDeleteMy grandmother was Dutch.
ReplyDeleteJack, unless you have medications right now -- AG is not listening!!!
ReplyDeleteWell, I think you know how I feel about it. If half of these people Had family or friends that had special needs, I'm fairly certain they'd choose their words more wisely.
ReplyDeleteFor the record, I NEVER used this word. Not ever.
I thought of you, DG.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of you, I got a lead on some Autism events coming up. I need to post them.
I'm glad I know where "full retard" comes from. This guy I slept with a couple of weeks ago... he used that phrase to describe his usual vocalizations during climax. (We had to keep quiet for reasons I won't get into here.)
ReplyDeleteIf you really think about it, we use tons of words that others find offensive. Also, we have a society that needs to be forced to see the offense. Something about the continual need to educate wears me out though. Thanks for posting this AG!
