The Forgotten Chosen People

You heard about Alabama and Georgia getting snow, didn't you? Well, the oh so liberal New York Times loves to tell us about both snow and how the Jews don't count in the South. The article was changed about a half hour ago where it was even more Christian slanted because it was all about how everyone missed church today. Wow. Everyone. I guess the vast number of Jews that make up Atlanta can go matzoh off! They can also take the much smaller, but still present, folks in Birmingham with them too. Do not get me wrong, I know it's the Bible Belt, but we Jews and other non Christians do count for something even if it isn't talk of your taxes, health care, or Hollywood.

Oh, and do you notice how the story begins with Birmingham and then mentions Philadelphia? Just sayin'. La. La. more...

  3. you know it always bothers me when the jewish people get left out, or something that is amazingly only christian happens down here. Our idiotic state government tries to put Jesus into the laws, they love ingoring the freedom of religion thing and separation of church and state. Yes it's the bible belt, it's an overwhelming and crushing air of conservative judgement. but that doesn't make it right.

  4. Thanks for your support, John. We just want a place at the seder table. That's all!

  5. I once heard a pretty great radio documentary about Secret Jews of the South: families hiding their heritage, even from their kids until the kids were old enough to also keep their shame secret!

  6. I've read some pretty profound things about the Southern Jews in that regard.

They have a Jewish Museum in MS I'd like to visit to explore such notions more.

I've also be asked to consider spending a few weeks teaching Jewish children in the "deep south" this summer.
