Now, I don't mean to interrupt AG's epic series on abortion politics (impressive though it is) but I thought I would toss in a quick musico post for my last remaining reader (you out there Zelmo?) and because I never managed to get out the Friday Random Zombie Musical Spew.
Today, I triggered an iTunes Genius playlist starting from the Mekons "Now We Have The Bomb", sung by Sally Timms, natch. (Small aside: the Mekes did a pro-choice anthem called "Born To Choose" on a benefit disc a few years back).
The Genius came up with an this semi-random:
1. Mekons, Now We Have The Bomb, live from Grant Park.
2. Neil Young, Powderfinger, Weld.
3. Kinks, Celluloid Heroes, To The Bone
4. Bowie, Heroes
5. Springsteen, Backstreets
6. Dire Straits, Down To The Waterline
7. The Who, 5:15
8. Velvet Underground, Rock n Roll
9. Talking Heads, Life During Wartime
10. Zevon, Lawyers, Guns and Money (one for Brando!)
11. Mekons, Millionaire (also sung by Sally) 25th anniversary acoustic live
12. Tom Petty, Even The Losers
13. The Band, The Night They Drove Old dixie Down
14. REM, South Central Rain
15. Tom Waits, Ol' 55
Mostly old stuff, I know AG will bust my chops for that, but it still sounds good.
Now here's my question: How does the search paradigm lead from the Mekons into that? It works, but it ain't natcheral.

Excellent with the REM, CSR!
ReplyDeleteUM, maybe a little comment on my Stanek take-down on the posty-post? You are my blog boyfriend so a little love now and again is expected in comments. ;)
never fear, dear. I started one, but couldn't make it make sense. I will work one out sooner or later, if I can get these friggin plans into shape....
ReplyDeletewait, what the hell is CSR? I'm blanking on it....
ReplyDeleteDyslexia. :) It was an incredibly busy day for me. Aaaargh.
ReplyDeleteI have no clue how genius does what it does. What a great song to start the list with though!! I was on the plane back from NYC yesterday and I spent part of the time starting the genius on random/weird/off choice songs just to see what it would come up with. Yep, I am a big nerd, but it was fun for me!! And, I'm still a reader ZRM....forever.... :)
ReplyDeleteTry starting "Genius" with a Beatles song. Then you'll discover how it works.
ReplyDeleteSir, you presuppose I have a Beatles song on my computer.....
ReplyDeleteI am starting to like Von better than Zelmo. Z always wants to start an argument, but this is obviously Getting Your Brainz Eaten lessons in here.
hey dude, you ever do anything on a drafting table anymore? Don't you miss the pencils and markers?
ReplyDeleteWell, Von IS better looking than Zelmo.
ReplyDeleteThe Beatles comment was ironic.
Drafting Table? Markers?
ReplyDeleteWhat are these strange implements of which you speak?
You know what? You guys oughta hire me to do renderings for ya.
ReplyDeleteRenderings? Can't you just push a button?
ReplyDeleteI think you're becoming marker addled.
Prismacolor Poisoning.
ReplyDeleteI'll sue em.
Mmmmmmm......Brick Beige......Light Gothic Oak....French Grey 40%.....
ReplyDeleteI'm getting a buzz just thinking about 'em.
Von, what were you doing in NYC?
ReplyDeleteZ-unit, thanks for supporting my posts. No, really.
It was for a work meeting. A sales meeting to bring us in to the second half of the year. It was really good that I was invited because I got to meet two of my reps that I work with and talk to every day but had never met.
ReplyDeleteHmm. That's pretty cool.
ReplyDeleteCool 'cause I'm old, and I've never heard anything by the mekons.
But a significant part of the Genius output is on my iPod.
Backstreets, 5:15, Life During Wartime, Zevon, The Band, REM, all stuff I like despite being born WELL over a half century ago.
I'll be asking Frostwire about the Mekons tomorrow...
mikey
Quite a classic list, sir. I like the acoustic "Celluloid Heroes" from To the Bone, and what a great lead in to "Heroes."
ReplyDeletemikey, the Mekes were part of the first wave of punk, class of 77... Formed by art-school kids after seeing the Pistols, they took the DIY aesthetic to the maximum by actually refusing to learn to play their instruments.
ReplyDeleteI love em, as most round here know, but your mileage may vary. They are admittedly an acquired taste.
Try the discs Rock n Roll, Fear and Whiskey, or more recently Natural or Journey to The End Of The Night.
