I've written before about the ITunes Genius. It does require uploading your musical tastes to a central database, but hey, I'm already on the HUAC and no-fly list, so giving Apple some of my data seems like small blue M&Ms, right? For a while, Genius would get stumped by obscure music, but it seems to be getting better. This afternoon, it came up with this (check out the initializing song: Byron, by the Mekons. Back when they were so punk, one chord was too many).
- Byron, The Mekons
- What Goes On, The Velvet Undreground
- Powderfinger, Neil Young and Crazy Horse (live)
- Satisfaction (I Can't Get No), Devo
- Fearless, Pink Floyd
- A Forest, The Cure
- Lips Like Sugar, Echo and the Bunnymen
- Cars, Gary Numan
- Gold Lion, Yeah Yeah Yeahs
- Icky Thump, The White Stripes
- rosanne, The Mekons
- Pictures, Galaxie 500
- Conduit For Sale, Pavement
- 'Cause It's Love (Saint Parallelogram), Robyn Hitchcock and the Venus Three
- In Between Days (The Cure)
- Whip It, Devo
- Space Oddity, David Bowie
- Work All Week, The Mekons
- We Love You, The Psychedelic Furs
- Fable Of The Brown Ape, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
- Poledo, Dinosaur Jr.
- Here Comes Your Man, The Pixies
- Here Comes A City, The Go-Betweens
- The Killing Moon, Echo And The Bunnymen
- Certain Songs, The Hold Steady
Now that's a playlist I can relate to. How do you pigeonhole that, Zelmo? But I'm telling you, three glasses of whine and a pretty good day, it sound just fine sittin here.
Well played, iTunes, well played indeed.
Nice!!
ReplyDeleteI've always dreamed of not having to be consciously aware of what I want to listen to, but to have some other portion of my brain just know... this sounds close.
Lips like sugah!
Don't you love that? A playlist with Bowie, Dino Jr, Floyd and The Cure?
ReplyDeletewhoah....
Throw in some Partridge Family and you'd be rocking.
ReplyDeleteOMG! I think you've corrupted Genius! What's it gonna do to the other people who use it!?!
ReplyDeleteWow, great list!! Makes me want to try out the genius too.....
ReplyDeleteFeh. iTunes now controls your tastes and desires. Next, computers will dictate artistic expression and free speech. Then the machines will rule the world.
ReplyDeletehuh.
ReplyDeleteZelmo is right. iTunes just banned him.
a special FBI agent is being assigned to monitor you as we type.
ReplyDeleteO I already assumed I had one of those K.
ReplyDeleteRight now he's watching me eat blue M&Ms.
Awesome list although it is showing your age.
ReplyDeleteMore punk. Less Dinosaur Jr. CRAP!
ReplyDeleteyea, fish, zombies have a way of just hanging around longer than they probably should...
ReplyDeleteIf AG ever visits, the soundtrack will be all "Freak Scene", "Feel The Pain" and "Puke And Cry"
Zelmo prefers to have his instructions beamed to him from outer space, from a satellite that watches his every move, even when he thinks no one can see....
ReplyDeleteRM, the sound track will be, "Let's Gettin' On" for Z-Unit and AG!
ReplyDeleteRM, you are correct. That's why I wear the tinfoil hat - better reception.
